Mathematical Modelling
Example 1: An optical system was being routinely used to measure the properties of ophthalmic lenses during manufacture. However unpredictable results were occasionally generated which limited wider application of the system.
The Solution: The entire system was modelled using Zemax. The Zemax macro language (ZPL) was used to model the non-optical parts,
enabling simulated measurement results to be generated under a variety of operating conditions.
It became possible to replicate the problem, understand the mechanisms and subsequently eliminate it.
With the model in place it was also possible to investigate design enhancements to the system.
Example 2: A manufacturer wished to upgrade the illumination system on an automated inspection system.
The Solution: By modelling the system it was possible to understand the role played by the illumination on the system output and to identify
the critical parameters.
This enabled a replacement system to be specified and installed with minimum down-time.
